Music has a way of changing your mood straight away or to transport you to your favorite memory. A psychological study conducted by students when fibromyalgia patients were exposed to 10-minutes of music they liked—anything from pop to folk to classical showed that the patients experienced less pain than before. I guess Bob Marley was on to something when he sang; “One good thing about music when it hits you feel no pain“. There’s no doubt that listening to your favourite music can instantly put you in a good mood. But scientists are now discovering that music can do more for you than just lift your spirits.

Music has the ability to cross barriers and share a message that otherwise would not be heard. This past summer a group of artists came together in Germany to tell stories of survivors of modern-day slavery. Danny Fresh wrote a powerful song about legalized prostitution in Germany.

Wenn das alles alles normal ist: warum weiß deine Frau nicht, dass du wieder einmal da bist? Kehr das gern unter’n Tisch. Nur ein Job? Dann schick deine Mutter auf den Strich!

It’s all normal you say, but how come your wife doesn’t know that you’re in the Red Light again. You  hide it, but call it a regular job. If it’s just a job why won’t you send your mother to walk the streets.  Harsh words, but true words. Women who make a living on their knees and clients who come to visit them to fulfill their ‘needs’.  Legalized prostitution doesn’t seem to take the stigma away from it. Prostitution is the oldest or one of the oldest professions some woud say, however it has still not been accepted by society as a regular job in countries where it has been legalized. The shame and the controversy make it that most prostituted people would not boldly state on their Facebook profile that they are currently working in the Red Light District. Why, because it isn’t a normal or regular job.

One of the main reasons prostitution has been legalized in the Netherlands is because the world of prostitution seemed to exploit the women working in prostitution. Breaking news, it still does! Legalization has only made it easier for the trafficker to sell ‘the product’ over and over again. Let’s listen to the lysrics and think about, would a young vibrant woman really choose to have sex with multiple men because this is what she has always wanted to do? At one point in history owning another human being was considered normal as well. Could it be that we are dealing with another form, but this time on a larger scale of slavery?

I hope you listen to this song and when the music hits you, please feel the pain!
