NETOP – Danish Network for non-formal adult education:

NETOP is a merger of 200 local non-formal adult education societies and groups. We are engaged in a wide variety of activities in education and crafts courses – weekend, day, and evening courses and classes.  We cover a wide range of subjects, but two things are near and dear to us: traditional crafts, and the society we all live in.

Crafts and craftsmanship

NETOP is founded in both training and artisan skills. The Danish Crafts Council is a co-founder and collective member, and is our lifeline to craftsmanship traditions. Our work is carried out with respect for the long tradition of craftsmanship, and with the ambition of extending knowledge to future generations. Our ambition is to maintain the link between traditional artisanship and the relevance of creativity and craftsmanship in our modern society.

Our role in society

NETOP strives to play a role in our society, locally, nationally, and globally. The other co-founder of NETOP, Frit Oplysningsforbund, is rooted in the Liberal-democrat Party. Of course you do not need party affiliations to join NETOP – the Liberal-democrat party is a collective member, not the other way around. But these roots mean that we wish to participate in many tasks in our society, such as integration of immigrants, public debate, public health, special needs education, democracy abroad, and much more.

More than evening classes

Local activities in NETOP’s member organisations vary widely. Of course we have 'ordinary' evening classes, but we are also engaged in second education projects, special needs classes and courses, day classes, and information campaigns, both on our own and in close co-operation with others.

NETOP’s engagement is not restricted to Denmark. We participate in specific local projects internationally, and co-operate with sister organisations in Scandinavia.

Background

NETOP was formed in 2004 as a merger between Frit Oplysningsforbund and The Danish Crafts Council's teaching activities. Our goal was to create a new and competently competitive network capable of adjusting to the ever-changing needs and challenges that face non-formal adult education today and in the future.

As our name implies, the very idea of networking is essential to NETOP. We see our main task in supplying our participants and students with meaningful and developing communities, whether they look for crafts skills, language teaching, lifestyle, or debate.

NETOP's purpose (as specified in our articles)
"NETOP will, based on purpose and basic values, conduct leisure education activities covering general, sustainable, financial, social, cultural, and craft topics.

NETOP wishes to advance and develop Danish cottage crafts and Danish identity, as well as preserving and relaying the cultural values inherent in craftsmanship.

NETOP's work is based on and serves to advance the United Nation's ideals of peace, tolerance, international understanding and international co-operation.

NETOP wishes to encourage active membership of society by:

·         Strengthening the ability and urge to be responsible for your own life

·         Supplying the opportunity and ability to participate in meaningful communities

·         Encouraging active and dedicated participation in society

·         Strengthening individual competencies and insights, both general and specific"
